Someone else mentioned “whatever” as another unworthy filler. But it is the “blah, blahs” that make me nuts. And worse when you catch yourself using them. What is the etiquette, then, in stopping someone mid “blah, blah” and asking them to explain what they really mean?

OhmyGod. I have a friend who consistently peppers her conversation with “blah blah blah” I thought it was an – her – personal conversation tic. (… Am I so ‘out of it?’ I missed Seinfeld, having been out of the country during those years so didn’t have the yada yada yada in my head as a point of reference…) It always annoys me for all the reasons you discuss … I feel as if I’m expected to fill in those blah blah blanks and almost more than anything, I dislike making assumtions. This is a terrific discussion!

“social networking” sites often seem pretty anti–social to me. They generally don’t invite response, as face to face interactions do. One-way conversations aren’t very satisfying to anyone but the speaker.
