Some girls will get into sports and others want to be cheerleaders and I don't know if anyone can do more than offer both, like the ballet and tee ball or kiddie soccer for everyone. Is it still cultural stereotyping or do you and readers think there's something about pink ballet shoes, which I adored, (but then became a jock later in life, after having been a song girl, blush) about pink and princess stuff...that's just girls?

good point about choices...my daughter has a good technique. instead of using the term "pretty," when her daughter walks out in her bling, etc. she says, "ooh, you look so fancy."

I have two granddaughters who are four and one who is three. It is as if that middle part--with the overalls, etc.--barely happened, and it is a hoot.

One girl chooses pink or red, one various shade of pink. The other purple. They love the princess frou-frou, plastic beads, dress-up heels. Barbies. I think it is great that their moms are just letting it go, while thinking, "I cannot believe this!" I cannot believe it, either, but on the other hand... Do not try and stand in their way. And that may have been the most important thing that we got across. They get it the whole ball of wax. Choices. Hooray!

I love it! I wish you would "Juicy Tomatoes" after every ballet day. I smiled the whole time I read it, just picturing our granddaughter's little face and big brown eyes. Thank you for always sharing. Love your words.
