I'm with the guys on this one. I NEVER watch the Oscars because..I don't know the people or the films, having sacrificed movies for NBA basketball.

I follow on ALL the NBA teams, the trades, the players, and for me, the pleasure of a good NBA basketball game beats the glamor of Hollywood, especially now as we approach the playoff stretch! Go Cavs!!! Beat Kobe and Gasol and the Fakers to a bloody pulp!

Thanks for the reminder, Susan. The lack of a cultural memory is dangerous.

My 13 year old niece is interviewing me for a history project. Her questions, "Was there really a generation gap in the 1960s and if so, how did you experience it?

I remember my mom telling me that college wasn't really important for girls (just my brothers). Now my sister has a Ph.D. and I have a MA and our brothers don't. It just wasn't long ago that we didn't have women in high office and women reporters couldn't have a by-line. Women working outside the home had only a few jobs: nurse, teacher, "stewardess", waitress and maid. We may not have equality, but we don't lack for brave women who blazed trails in all career fields.

Oh yeah, I love the Oscars. My spouse also thinks it's idiotic and rigged but he'll come in to watch a bit especially if supper's only being there. My cousin who lives in LA and has lots of ties to the movies calls the evening her HIgh Holy Days and makes all the cheesy, bacon-wrapped-shrimp munchies she can, then dressed to walk down the red carpet, sits and enjoys the whole thing while HER husband grimaces and kibbutzes. Keep these guys in another room if they don't dig it. Can't wait.

I think the coolest thing would be for women's history to be taught as the integral part of history that it is. Not separate - but, an equal part.

thanks, Susan! yes, we still need a spotlight on women's history and on the distortions pushed on us by the mainstream media. I look forward to seeing Seneca Falls.
Here's an interesting small study of teens today:

Certainly merits major attention. Even just the little things require our remembering. I remember in the late 70's and the early 80's loving the "Boyclub". We went almost everyday, but upon checking in we would protest and question why they called it the BOYS club. We'll they eventually changed it (Boys and Girls Club of America). I bet you there were thousands of girls like us all over America protesting decidedly. This would most likely be, from at least my point of view, because the parents we had that told us we could be anything we wanted and to go out and get it.

I want 30 Susan Swartzes out there and I want to marry each of them off to each of my sons and daughters.

Some girls will get into sports and others want to be cheerleaders and I don't know if anyone can do more than offer both, like the ballet and tee ball or kiddie soccer for everyone. Is it still cultural stereotyping or do you and readers think there's something about pink ballet shoes, which I adored, (but then became a jock later in life, after having been a song girl, blush) about pink and princess stuff...that's just girls?

good point about choices...my daughter has a good technique. instead of using the term "pretty," when her daughter walks out in her bling, etc. she says, "ooh, you look so fancy."

I have two granddaughters who are four and one who is three. It is as if that middle part--with the overalls, etc.--barely happened, and it is a hoot.

One girl chooses pink or red, one various shade of pink. The other purple. They love the princess frou-frou, plastic beads, dress-up heels. Barbies. I think it is great that their moms are just letting it go, while thinking, "I cannot believe this!" I cannot believe it, either, but on the other hand... Do not try and stand in their way. And that may have been the most important thing that we got across. They get it the whole ball of wax. Choices. Hooray!

Very thoughtful column, Susan. For 'women of a certain age' who are nearing or into retirement (love the term jubilada!) there are internal questions. One of mine is: how do I feel 'productive' when I'm not working for a living? Does productive mean making money? Does being productive mean actively working on a schedule or keeping busy? After my mother retired, she was dressed with makeup and hair combed by 7:30, afraid someone might come by if she was still in her robe and think she was lazy. This is an important topic and one I hope you return to fairly often on your website. Many of us have questions, and luckily, some have found answers that I hope they will share.
